Why this must be read: Because Chuck has a vision of Dean's death ... and Castiel's holding the smoking gun, or more accurately, the bloody knife in this case. Of course no one believes it can be true, but at the same time, Chuck's visions have proven to be pretty accurate and can't be discounted. We all know how much Winchesters love to sacrifice themselves when family's on the line.

Told through multiple points of view, the story inches towards the inevitability of the vision while the boys (with help from Bobby, Chuck, and Cas) try everything to change the future. Dean and Castiel's relationship grows along with the tension and the plot unfolds with a layered intricacy that captures the characters and their relationships so well.

"I said to you once, Dean - all roads lead to the same destination."

"But we - wait, no." A dull squeak of wood and then Dean is sitting at Castiel's side, knees splayed around the back of a flimsy dining chair. "We didn't follow the yellow brick road, Cas. Chuck said we were never supposed to be in his kitchen that day. He never saw us poof in and talk to him, he never saw you -" The word catches in Dean's throat, the taste of
disobey too bitter and heavy to push out, saturated with too much blame, too much guilt. "That was never supposed to happen but we changed all that."

A short movement of Castiel's jaw ground together fills the lull. "Chuck never saw an alternate occurrence either, Dean. Omission is not a justifiable -"

"But we did something we weren't supposed to do, Cas, don't you get that? That's huge! That's enough proof to be able to say Chuck's visions or pipe dreams or whatever the hell they are, don't always come true like he sees them. Whatever those dicks had in store, we changed all that. We went against what Chuck prophesied once and we can sure as hell do it again."

"But did we?" Castiel's head pivots to stare Dean in the eye, keeping him pinioned in place. "Did we change all that, or was our path, my rebellion, just an alternate route to arrive ultimately at the same destination? By changing something, did we change anything at all?"

Dean huffs a short sigh. "You're telling me you think this is all still part of the plan?"

God has a plan for us all, he is expecting. There is a design.

God has nothing to do with it, he would say. But he doesn't.

Quiet rises into the gap behind the question before Castiel turns his head to stare at the dishwasher again. "I don't
know."
