Why this must be read: To make some extra coin for engine parts, Kaylee enters a stripping contest at a bar owned by good old Monty. Coincidentally, Bourne from Paradiso happens to be in attendance. I love the way E'trix uses minor characters from canon to great effect, and keeps their voices and characters wonderfully recognizable, even with so little canon to draw upon as example. She brings a satisfying sense of depth to both characters, too. The dialogue is witty and sparkling, and the descriptions are funny and clever and occasionally lyrical. Zoe's dry, often deadpan humor in particular makes for some awesome lines. Most of all, I also, as in canon, love Kaylee's uninhibited, earthy pride and joy in her body, which is showcased just beautifully here.
It wasn’t just the wonderful moment out of time, like the one between somersaulting over the railing of the loft and landing on the bales of hay. It was the way that coming made Kaylee feel proud: proud of the strength of the muscles that moved her, proud of the smoothness of her skin and the suppleness of the lines of her body, and she was sure that when she was old and none of those were true then coming would still make her happy to remember that once she was.
