I Keep Falling Off the Roof by Ana Lyssie Cotton (PG-13)
Fandom: X-men comics
Pairing: None.
Author on LJ:
lyssie
Author's Website: Lyss' Insanity Lair
Why this must be read:
Ah, the legendary roof of the X-mansion: home of mutant angst, brooding, Endless Twu Luv, fanfic cliches galore, and more angst. Known especially as the favorite spot of one Remy Lebeau.
As you can probably tell, the X-mansion roof is used a *lot* in X-men fic. This uses the cliche of the mansion roof in little ingenious, funny, weird ways. It's creepy, funny, touching and surreal; it's incredibly well-crafted, with language that's both simple and compelling.
I also love the Storm in this piece: Ororo's playful side is something we almost never see in both fic and canon, and this fic does a wonderful job of portraying her when she's not in 'serene goddess' mode.
As for what actually *happens* in the fic... Gambit falls off the roof. Or maybe he doesn't. And that's all I'm going to say, because I don't want to spoil any more.
Clouds suddenly began gathering over him, and he blinked in time to the raindrops which suddenly fell upon him. They were very cold drops, drawing immediate goose bumps everywhere as he lay there, allowing them to drench him as he wallowed.
Really, it was to be expected. First, a crappy day. Then, almost falling. And now, rain. Cold and wet rain. Not that rain wasn't normally wet, but Gambit felt that this rain had a special irritation against him the way it continually pelted him.
Also, there was only the one cloud over him. The rest of the roof was completely dry, starlight shining on the shingles.
Which left only one culprit, really.
