Time will do anything to gain a foothold in the present, it whispers its promises to us when we're vulnerable, showing us fragments of what was; then it lies to us and tells us that this could still be. Sapphire and Steel have to battle both, Time itself and the human desire to hold on to the past.

kittenmommy has found a way to use structure and imagery to tell a story that has the feel of an episode; dreamlike fragments that build on each other, until in the end we realize what's at stake and how the battle against time devastates its participants. An unusual and beautifully written piece, impossible to excerpt--just go read.

I like the way it just showed up one day. S&S stories aren't just hard to write though, I'm finding them very hard to explain.

It's like you said about the stories themselves - once you start trying to explain, the mystery and magic are gone. I think this one works as much for what's left out as what's put in.
