JD and Casey are a canon couple I really like because of their counterbalance to the stressful, adult shenanigans of the others. Not all in the garden is lovely, though. JD is caught between the thrills and responsibilities of his “job” and the prospect of a happy and stable future. Casey, for her part, is very young and might be condemning herself to domestic drudgery when perhaps her dreams could take her elsewhere. But in the meantime they have Young Love to pursue. This story sees them in peril, and stumbling over the difficult business of the business, while off-stage Ezra teaches Vin card trickery and Vin tries to teach Ezra how to track.
She turned, holding up a flour-covered hand to stop JD from speaking. "Son, I know you have feelin's for Casey -- heck, it's probably more obvious to everyone in this territory than it is to the two of you -- but I just want you to remember two things. . ."
JD waited, finding it hard to face Nettie Wells. But at least it wasn't like standing up to a desperate outlaw, the kid thought.
"Casey's just sixteen. And I own a Spencer carbine."
Nope, it was worse.
JD swallowed hard before choking out, "Yes, ma'am," in a tone of infinite understanding.
