Why this must be read: This is a short slice of character and relationships from Kaylee's POV. I like the way
little_missmimi makes this pairing make sense; she really draws the parallels between the character's attitudes and forthright owning of their own desires well. In some stories it feels natural for opposites to attract, but in this fic
little_missmimi does a fine job of making it seem more natural for Kaylee to jar with people as different from her as Simon and Inara, and to fit more comfortably with River instead.
"The heart is extremely ill-advised. Atriums and ventricles and blood--it flows through, but never analyzes."
River starts to step out of her clothes; they come off easy: shirt, one of Kaylee's old skirts, panties, but no bra. (Sometimes she forgets.)
"What are you doing?" Kaylee asks, and River just looks annoyed that Kaylee hasn't caught on yet.
"It's too warm in here," she replies. "Your turn." Her voice is all prim, and she's just standing there naked, unashamed.
Confidence is good, Kaylee muses absentmindedly. She’s just goin' after what she wants, and can just...say so. River ain't Simon, but...maybe that’s a good thing.
