Why this really should be read:

Back in the pre-hiatus days, not only were *NSYNC in the media constantly, so were their girlfriends. Websites, mentions in j14 or the Enquirer, the whole nine yards. Fandom consensus (slash/etc and non-fanfiction-oriented) was pretty clear: Chris's Dani was cool, Joey's Kelly was largely ignored, all of Lance's girlfriends were beards (this was more a slash fan opinion), Justin's Britney was a whole 'nother story and JC's Bobbie was a bitch.* But not always.

I started reading popslash over three years ago because Helen was writing it, and choosing one of her stories was difficult. But this story takes a character we think we know, starfucker bitch girlfriend, and makes her feel real and smart and even heartbreaking.

I'm not into popslash but I'm curious as to what a "beard" is. I'm guessing it's implying that the girlfriend is there to make the boyfriend appear straight?

Exactly. Bearding is a common term, for the women gay men marry/appear with in order to appear less gay.

It's more of a general gossip term than a slash term. There is no other phenomenon on earth to explain things such as Liberace's marriage to a woman. Or the time that Kevin Spacy dated Helen Hunt.

That sort of thing.
