Why this must be read: In lieu of a new episode tonight (*sniff*), I thought I’d offer some of Molly’s recent work instead. These short stories are all set after the end of The Ties That Bind, and even though none are longer than a thousand words they convey volumes. In The Wicked Lies We Tell, Molly writes about Luke in Portland – I love the way he deals with his new life by imagining a better old one. His distance from that old life is too great to overcome. Then in These Tears We Cry she deals with Kirsten and Sandy’s grief, and the love that holds them together. In the third story, There’s No Hope In You For Me, Molly gets inside Seth’s head as he sails away on the Summer Breeze. I was close to tears by the end. The fourth story, Fluttering, deals with Theresa and Ryan and the baby. All of them are brilliant.
An excerpt from There’s No Hope In You For Me:
He’d pulled this whole fleeing-to-the-open-ocean thing for a million different reasons, but what it boiled down to was that he couldn’t stay in Newport without Ryan. Maps say Chino is an hour away, and maybe it is if you’re taking the 55, but in all the ways it really counts?
Seth could drive for days and he’d never get there.
