The Lay of Sir William of Daira by selenak, PG-13

Hi all! I'm [livejournal.com profile] anjali_organna , and I'll be your Merlin driver for the month. First up, a little humorous look at everyone's favorite fake!Arthur.

Fandom
: MERLIN
Pairing: William/Everyone (he wishes), some background A/G
Length: one-shot
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] selenak
Author Website: Her AO3 page
Why this must be read: Selena takes a one-episode guest-star and spins a hilarious yarn about a simple country farmer brought to the big-er-town of Camelot for a fairly ridiculous switcheroo with a certain Prince of the realm. While William was played as a buffoon on the show, Selena digs a little deeper to show us a man who knows he's playing a ridiculous role and accepts it for the wild, once-in-a-lifetime ride it is. Her William is funny and observant while still retaining the elements of charm that marked the character on the show. Also, he amusingly develops a crush on pretty much everyone he meets, hence the pairing(s).

Since [Arthur] was in a good mood, William felt emboldened to ask something he’d missed asking the day before.

“Err, Sire,” he said, “are knights bad losers?”

“Yes,” Merlin said promptly.

“No,” Arthur said, elbowing his servant.

“Because if you keep winning, I’ll be sharing quarters with a lot of people who think I threw them in the dust today,” William said meaningfully.

“They’ll celebrate you as a worthy opponent,” Arthur said. “It would be dishonourable to do anything else.”

“Like using enchanted snakes,” Merlin muttered. “That
never happens.”

That was terrific. It makes me want to watch the episode again.
