Why this must be read: She likes having someone to sleep next to and so does Leonard. This is a story about settling for your second choice and it's heartbreaking yet heart warming. You can feel the emptiness Spock left behind within Uhura and the unfulfilled yearning McCoy has for Kirk, and how they almost- but not quite - fill the voids within each other. 

Spock's first Pon Farr comes. It's sooner than any of them would have liked but it is dealt with. She had forgotten that T'Pring would be dead - she'd hated the woman so much, three years ago. But you forget who died when it's everyone that died, and Spock being betrothed or not stopped mattering to her soon after the destruction of Vulcan, anyway.

She attends the ceremony on New Vulcan because Kirk asks Leonard and Leonard asks her and Spock asked her, too, once. If she didn't think it would be emotionally difficult for her. That was years ago but he did ask and she can't say no to any of them. She and Leonard hold hands and watch as Spock and Jim make vows older than every civilization on Terra. She cries. Because she is not on duty and because she learned a long time ago to make her tears look like happy ones. Leonard doesn't cry. That night he proposes, she doesn't delude herself about the timing, not for a moment.

She doesn't know why she says yes but she does.
