Why this must be read:
It's a story which elevates a minor character: Rorschach's despised, despicable mother. The canon encourages us to hate this character, since she's only ever shown in flashbacks, recalled as lifelong trauma by the kid she abused.
In No surrender, Sylvia is the protagonist, and it's her trauma driving the story. Her experiences are described brutally, well enough to make you wince, and this fic is all about the sympathetic reaction. The storytelling never gets vague or sentimental, and Sylvia's never held up as a victim, but her misery is morbidly compelling to read and it's hard not to sympathize as she struggles through it.

I really wish I could've written this one better! I was stuck for a long time trying to express SO MANY FEELINGS and eventually had to just resign to not being able to get them down and hit post. I hope people will still clickthrough and see all the awesome things about the story that I failed to mention.
