Why this must be read: Written for the 2009 Big Bang Blackout Challenge, this is a lovely au of Prisoner of Azkaban.
clutzycricket makes two changes: (1) Sirius gets a wand; (2) he snoops around a Muggle paranormal reporter who ends up helping him. This is really a story about Sirius and his journey to Hogwarts to find Peter and clear his name. The original character, Jenna, is nicely three dimensional and helps to calm Sirius down when he gets too excited and blinded by his own goals. Of course, he has to get her to the point where she trusts him and that is a fun journey as well.
Jenna Andrews looked up from her latest… you know, she didn't even really call them assignments, really — more ideas she had to twist and fix to get to a deadline. The Susanna Reimer Magazine, originally dedicated to news of hauntings in the United States, specifically in older East Coast cities, had branched out with its audience to cover basically anything unexplainable that readers wrote in about. It wasn't a tabloid really, as the editor would rather have the five journalists/photographers/secretaries tell a good story, rather than fill it up with lies.
Anyway, she looked up to see her boss, Dean Cooper, look at her with his normal hang-dog expression. "Why'd we get you a Mac, anyway?"
"I got myself the Mac, and I got it so I could clean up the goddamn photos Jules keeps taking," Jenna said wryly, looking up from her Powerbook. Jules was brilliant at interviews, and usually took up copy-editing in a pinch, but the man couldn't photograph for beans. "What's wrong now?"
"You know Lucille Harding?" he said, rubbing the bridge of his nose. Jenna winced. Lucille Harding was as batty as they came, and special ordered the Reimer over to her Liverpool home since she moved there three years ago. And never failed to send letters for every issue with suggestions. "She finally came up with something that might be good." He handed her the news clipping.
"Sirius Black? Never heard of… wait, Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries?" Jenna looked over her screen at him. "That's… special. What did he do, tip sheep?"
