Goat Song by scarlet_carsons (R)
Fandom: WATCHMEN
Pairing: Adrian Veidt gen
Length: ~4000 words
Author on LJ:
scarlet_carsons
Author Website: List of fics
Why this must be read:
Ignoring the pitch-perfect atmospheric writing, the attention to detail, the slow, methodical build-up, and the suspense that leaves you wondering what's happened to Adrian until the end, this fic deserves a rec because of how wonderfully Adrian is characterized. Adrian is an incredibly difficult character to write, but
scarlet_carsons makes it look easy: His thought processes and behavior are so believable, ambiguous, and thoughtful.
This is an incredibly dark fic, but the writing is careful enough that Adrian is sympathetic without becoming a woobie; it gives us a long look at Adrian that is compelling.
It's curious: most torturers try to deprive their victims of sleep. Adrian has trouble keeping awake.
Naturally, he tries to fight it. He remains standing in the middle of the room, watching the door, keeping himself uncomfortable. He listens to Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 1 in C minor inside his head. He tries to coax a stress response out of his autonomic nervous system, but it remains uncooperative.
He avoids speculating as to what is being done with his body during the blackouts.
