Why this must be read: When I talk about my favorite S&H writers, Kaye Austen Michaels is always on my list. She has written a wide variety of stories and she delivers what I want in a good tale: great characterizations, good case fic, angst, and love. This particular story is about the first couple of weeks after Starsky's release from the hospital following Gunther's attempt to kill him. Revelations about his life from a decade ago make Hutch question how much he really knows about his best friend, the man he has fallen in love with.
Where in all that was cause to be angry with him?
Hutch stopped cold and shoved his hands in his pockets.
Was he angry because Starsky waited a decade to tell him about this aspect of his past? Was that what propelled him out of the apartment when Starsky needed his understanding and unconditional love most of all?
This wasn't something a man pulled out of his scrapbook over bottles of beer and Huggy's nachos. Starsky had chosen to share this painful, controversial time in his life for the sake of his best friend's safety-risking, as he'd said, changing Hutch's view of him forever.
Hutch had rewarded that courage and concern with holier-than-thou condemnation.
