chamekke, and I've been given the keys to the crack_van for Life on Mars this month. I hope to rec some lesser-known older fics and do a spot of pompom-waving for more recent ones that may have escaped your notice :-)

Why this must be read: What better way to kick off a month of recs than to begin with young Sammy? This sweetly dreamlike fic focuses on a cold and starry night in early 1973 when Sammy's parents take him out to look at the sky... then revisits it from adult Sam's point of view.

fawsley shows us the Tyler family when they were still radiantly happy, adding even more poignancy to Sam's desperation to make Vic stay in 1x08. And then... she deftly wraps it up with an ending that is nothing short of glorious.

Because the story is written in a Sammy-style stream of consciousness, it's difficult to do it justice with an excerpt. Better just to put on a warm woolly hat and dive right in!
