Why this must be read:
Because, like the best fics in any fandom, you end up getting a lot more than the main story.
Told from Fraser's POV, we follow along as Fraser and RayK approach a group of teen girls playing in order to get some info regarding a criminal. When RayK does something unexpected, it gets Fraser piecing theories on RayK's history vs. what he thinks he knows about his partner.
Another cool thing about this fic is, ironically, how little whimsy there is in it. Especially when one takes into account how much magical realism was woven into the show's canon. The realistic approach (from the girls' wariness of police to the need for "keeping a front") is quite fitting for this story.
Some girls in the projects are playing a game of Double Dutch. They pay absolutely no attention to Ray and Fraser, though Fraser is certain they have seen them. It is rather difficult to avoid seeing the Red Serge, after all, and the statistical likelihood of nine teenage girls, most of them unrelated, being red-green colorblind is vanishingly small. Virtually impossible, Fraser decides.
Or at the least, freakishly improbable, as Ray might say.
