Why this must be read: Grace's life from seven to ten, learning to drive a car and so much more.

This is another of my favourite Killjoys stories. It's such a wonderful portrait of Grace. She's such a strong character, with so much personality. I absolutely love the way we get to see the world through her eyes, everything coloured by what she knows and thinks about it. It's an incredibly vivid and rich story.

Excerpt from the story:

Kobra fires a couple of shots and one of the dracs fires back, and then suddenly Kobra's yelling something and she looks up in time to see Poison jerk and slump over against the window. Kobra lunges for the steering wheel, accidentally slamming her head back against the glove compartment with his knobby knees. He keeps them from running off the road, though.

"Hit the gas," he says, because they're slowing down fast and the dracs are still right behind them. She thinks he's talking to Poison until he says it again - "The gas!" - and nudges her with his knee.

So she twists and stretches across the footwell and presses down as hard as she can on Poison's dusty boot. The engine roars in response, and they're off again.

They drive that way for miles, until Ray's sure they've lost the dracs. They only have to shift gears twice, and she's glad Poison's passed out so he can't hear the awful noises his car makes as Kobra talks her through it. Also because she's halfway in Poison's lap by then, braced against his belly, and if he were awake she'd probably be hurting him. He's bleeding from somewhere, a lot, and by the time they can finally pull over and move him into the backseat there's blood all down the back of her shirt and matted in her hair.

She's not scared, though.

Everyone's fine except Poison, and Ray tells her he's had worse.

So there's really nothing to be scared about, and she's not.

She's seven now, probably, or close enough that she's too old to be scared of stupid stuff like that. Definitely too old to be scared of the dark. Ray doesn't say anything when she creeps into his room that night, though - just scoots over on the mattress and tucks his hair behind him so it's not taking up the whole pillow.

When Poison finally wakes up the next afternoon, wrecked and pale, the first thing he says is: "Shitfucking cocksucker."

The second thing, after Kobra tells him what happened, is: "We gotta teach the kid how to drive."
