Why this must be read: Everyone knows that Mikey and Gerard are close and everyone thinks they know why. They are all wrong. The one where Gerard is an alien that gets adopted by the Ways.

This is absolutely amazing. It's a story about being different, about love and free will, and it's intense and beautiful and heartbreaking at times. I love the characterisations of Mikey and Gerard and the hints we get of the fascinating alien species/civilisation Gerard is from. The way Mikey and Gerard's mental closeness is written is just marvelous and Elena is a wonderful supporting character. One of the Must Reads of this year's [livejournal.com profile] bandombigbang.

Excerpt from the story:

Mikey knows exactly the first time anyone says anything about him and Gerard. It's one of those moments, like the first time Gerard held his hand or the first time he spoke in English, that Mikey can pinpoint exactly.

The elementary school and junior high share a playground/outside lunch area and Gerard's class have lunch the same time as Mikey's have recess. So usually, Gerard would bring his lunch bag over and eat under the jungle gym while Mikey hung upside-down from the rungs and made faces at him, trying to distract him from his drawing. Sometimes it worked. Most of the time Gerard would just wrap playful blue amusement around Mikey's brain to let him know that he wasn't being ignored and keep on doing whatever he was doing.

Gerard isn't the best with other people, Mikey's noticed. He tried when he first started speaking English and started school. He used that musical energy that seemed to be a part of everything Gerard is and did that play his first grading period in school. But it hadn't done him any favors, even years later.

Mikey thinks it's because people are stupid. Gerard thinks it's because people can tell that there's something different about him. So he spends most of his time being bullied or alone.

Mikey wants to tell him that's not true. But he can't lie, not to Gerard. He'd be able to tell anyway.

Of course there's something different about him. He's an alien. There's never been anything else more different in existence, ever. Just because people don't know what it is they're picking up on that's different doesn't mean they can't tell. But people are jerks about difference so Gerard keeps to himself.

Mikey hates it when Gerard's alone, especially when he doesn't have to be. He sends out little subconscious thought telegraphs of 'I'm here, if you need me I'm here' whenever they're apart. That's pretty insufficient, though.

Gerard tries to keep those feelings from him (unless he's in art class then Mikey has a hard time focusing on whatever Mrs. Lewis is trying to say because Gerard's full of so many ideas and excited thoughts that its distracting) but it doesn't really work. Gerard thinks he needs to protect him or something, like Mikey's the one who could get taken away if anyone found out. Mikey doesn't usually fight it too hard. He likes the fact that Gerard wants to take care of him as much as he wants to take care of Gerard.

Waiting in the Sky

This is my last rec for the month. I hope you've managed to find something worth reading among the stories I've recced.

PS The van is in urgent need of more more bandom reccers. It's neither particularly difficult nor burdensome: you have a whole month and you only have to do twelve recs. There is even a posting template! (Check out the posting guidelines here.)

I love your recs on delicious, and I appreciate the recs you post here this month. It's nice to see why you chose each story.

Thank you!
