Why this must be read: To say that this short story packs an emotional punch is the understatement of the century. I remember first seeing it pop up during a ficathon. Within the hour I had memorized which comment page it was on so that I could reread it whenever I checked back. This story makes me ache for these characters, for Elena and for Damon and for the silent ghost of Stefan always between them. It paints the relationship in such a believable way, as a recurring tragedy of lost chances and false starts.
