Why this must be read: This story is pretty much the ultimate "Introduction To BDSM" fic, and has been (very rightly) circling everyone's rec lists this year. The fic starts in a space that is very much like the characters - laughing, lawn chairs, asphalt and beer - and Brendon and Spencer find themselves in a space where Brendon gets too much inside his head sometimes and finds that he gets a serious release from it by being told what to do by Spencer. The most incredible, amazing thing is that it's not sexual. [livejournal.com profile] fictionalaspect explores this so beautifully: for so many people, a kink may not be about sex, and for Brendon he just finds that "being under" helps him work through and manage his own life.

Things progress slowly and they both tread so carefully, to respect each other's boundaries, but despite this you can feel the possibility in the air between them - and things are non-sexual until one time they aren't any more, and it's electrifying to watch them confront that, to reconcile that with their existing relationship. The most incredible thing is that through all of this, they are still themselves, still so in character, still engaging with the rest of the band, doing the day-to-day things that guys in bands do. It makes for a really unique journey that is not just about a building relationship and some really hot sex, but about someone learning more about themselves, and how they choose to express and be themselves in the wold - and that alone is pretty beautiful.

Excerpt:

"I was thinking," Brendon says, heedless and rolling on his shopping high. "You know, when we get back to Cali. Or Vegas. Maybe I could—find someone."

"Oh," Spencer says. "Uh."

"Really on the DL," Brendon says. "I mean, shit. That can't get out."

"Are you sure that's a good idea?" Spencer says, very carefully, like he's weighing each word as it comes out.

"Not really," Brendon admits. "But I just—dude, it itches. Under my skin. I have to know."

"Maybe you should get that checked out," Spencer says, and Brendon laughs. Spencer grins at him, warm and familiar even though his eyes are hidden behind large black shades.

"I was thinking the exact opposite, actually," Spencer says, three blocks later. "I thought. Maybe you and me?"
