Why this must be read: In the MCR corner of bandom, "asshole!Frank" has become a well-loved characterization of Frank. However, more often than not, stories that attempt that characterization end up diverging so wildly from the Frank that we know, it's hard to relate to or care about him.
Instead, this story does an incredible job of making him a genuine asshole, a really unattractive personality, but still making us care by showing all of him for what he is: someone who doesn't know how to ask for things any other way than making someone angry enough to give it to him, who looks for intimacy in fists and teeth and his knees hitting the gravel, and who uses insults to let someone know how much he cares about them. Frank's pretty messed up in this story, but he's also pretty gone for Bob and Bob gets him. And that's why - in amongst the spitting and snarling - you see exactly why they're so good for each other. That, I think, makes it a pretty unique story and definitely worth a read!
Excerpt:
Bob reaches over and shoves Frank’s head into the window, hard, harder than he would have if he’d stopped to think first. There’s a loud, sickening crack of impact, and Bob thinks, oh shit, motherfucker, at the same time that he hears Frank make this soft little noise.
Bob yanks on the wheel, turns into the empty parking lot of an auto garage. Frank is over the gear shift and into his lap so fast it makes Bob dizzy, and then Frank’s tongue is down Bob’s throat, Frank’s arms are flailing and punching Bob in the head, possibly accidentally, and Frank’s teeth are sunk in Bob’s lower lip, and Frank’s knee is jammed up against Bob’s nuts. Bob is in so many kinds of pain that he doesn’t have time for shock. He shoves Frank back into the wheel, and the horn sounds out loud in the empty parking lot.
"What?" pants Frank, sounding insulted, like Bob is the one doing irrational things.
