Why this must be read: In this 'verse, the Doctor has always been female – until she reincarnates into her tenth body and suddenly finds herself – well, himself. I'm not a fan of genderswitch for the sake of genderswitch, butjoking really manages to turn it into something special.
While this whole series is awesome, the stories with the ninth Doctor (which is most of them so far) are my favorites. The amazing thing is thatjoking manages to have the female Doctor be entirely the Doctor we know, and yet different. They portray the relationship between the Doctor and her companions deftly and with much tenderness. Hangman, for example, is a story where Jack's past comes back to haunt him – the Time Agency, his family, and old enemies. The Doctor is his secure pillar in the maelstrom (even though Jack doesn't know it at first).
