Why this must be read: There is crackfic, and... Yeah, like that. As a fine purveyor of crackfic myself, I am not immune to reading it (actually, it went the other way around). Quite honestly, I think that crackfic is the best comedy fic in any fandom. The reflexive nature of the stories assumes reader participation on a level that other stories simply don't. I know everyone reads stories like these, but they rarely admit it.

uh, I think the term crack is sort of a floating one. It depends on who you ask. It signifies that the user thinks a certain fic is insane, really strange, or AUish in a major way. Crackfic also tends to be funny.
