The Anthemicronicon: Book of Ages by Jehane Writes (PG-13)
Fandom: AMERICAN IDOL SEASON 7
Pairing: David Cook/David Archuleta
Length: ± 35,000 words
Author on LJ:

Author Website: fic master list [flocked]
Why this must be read: Let's start with the summary: In this gas-lit steampunk world where spells are channeled through music and licensed for use, David Cook and the Anthemic are the strongest fieldcasting band of House Nineteen. President McKinley has been assassinated at the 1901 World’s Fair – were songcasters involved? Cook and his band investigate amid the skyscrapers and airships of pre-WW1 AU New York City.
If the Lovecraftian historical setting is not enough to make you want to read this (it was enough for me, but I am a complete sucker for this time period; Devil in the White City, anyone?), the lush and layered tale Jehane presents will pull you in and you may find yourself giving an entire afternoon to this fic. The characters are fleshed-out into real heroes with flaws in a world that seems almost fantastically perfect except for little things... those details that hang us up at first and then become exceedingly important. If ever a fic needed a "the devil is in the details" sub-heading, it would be this fic. I don't want to say too much because I do believe this is one story that is best read the first time around with very little information as to what happens because the suspense and tension sweep the reader back in time and drop you down the rabbit hole into this incredible world.
"The Anthemicronicon: Book of Ages" is definitely one of my favorite fan fictions ever, and that it features David Cook and David Archuleta (as well as favorites from other seasons of AI) is a complete bonus. This is one of the definitive stories of the AI 7 fandom and it should not be missed.
