Why this must be read: A bit of fluff, a bit of smut, and a lighthearted post-BDM take on one of the movie's happy endings. It's hard to have a budding romance in tight quarters with nosy crewmates and a mind-reader.

Not that it wasn't nice. It was *real* nice. Better than nice. Just... it was one night, and they had to lock River out of Kaylee's bunk and she banged on the door next morning way before any reasonable person would have been up and breakfasting and they heard Jayne laugh as he left his rack and say something about "leaving them lovebirds to love some more; real pretty chirpin'" and that was just annoying.

Annoying for Kaylee, who's used to Jayne. Worse for Simon, who thinks Jayne's lower than duck spit and still isn't accustomed to shipboard life and how they're all on top of each other and private's a word that just means 'nobody nearby and noticing'.

So since then, Simon's slept in his unlocked room with his psychic sister wandering in whenever she feels the urge which is just off-putting and he's never come to Kaylee's bunk at all. Too many listening ears on all sides, he thinks.

Sure, they kiss and smile and Simon bought her a pin with the last of his medication money just because it reminded him of her eyes. It's all proper and like being teen sweethearts, but even when she was fourteen Kaylee knew she wanted more from her sweetheart than kisses and gifts. Got it, too.

Because Kaylee's a planner. Sure, there's a time to go on instinct and spot the flaw just before the hairline crack goes critical cos something just don't feel right. But there's a time for learning gorram well what every bearing and shaft and dampener's for and how it functions and why – and then for plotting how you'll make it work that bit sweeter so it don't crack at all.

So Kaylee plots. Puts on her best frillies under the coveralls. Sets out candles in her rack, all ready to be romantic.
