Gift Horse by Dargelos (R)

Fandom: OZ
Pairing: n/a (well...a tiny bit of Beecher/Keller)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dargie
Author Website: Dargie's Outpost
Why this must be read:

From the first moment I volunteered to do Oz recs for this month, I knew this would be the one I did last. I.....well, I just absolutely adore it. In my opinion, it's one of the funniest Oz stories *ever*.

I'd really rather not give away too much of what happens, because I think that first moment when you realize where the story's going is one of the funniest parts of reading it. Suffice it to say that it primarily consists of a conversation between Tobias Beecher and Bob Rebadow, one of the more elderly inmates in Oz. If you've actually *seen* Rebadow in the show and can imagine him saying the things he does in this story, it will be a lot funnier; even if you haven't, though, I still really must insist that you read it. It's short, and it's *hilarious*.

Hee, so glad you liked it this much. I have to admit that it makes me laugh. I don't know if that's bad or not, laughing at your own stuff.

Are you kidding?!?

When it's as funny as this...I can't imagine not laughing at your own work. I've looked through your site a few times, and read a fair amount, but somehow I missed this one. Even as I laughed, I could sympathize with Toby...I was getting the willies too, with Bob going on and on... Ewwww.

By the way...your Rough Trade stories were some of the first long pieces I read in Oz fanfic. Thanks for the amazing intro to Ozfic.

Thanks, that's very kind of you! I'm always kind of bemused by the popularity of that series. I mean, I love it myself and it doesn't surprise me that others do, too. But I never honestly expected so many people to love it as much as they seem to, particularly considering some of the subject matter.

Well, you know...

...the subject matter can be startling at first, and to those who haven't been involved in it, or at least read about it, it might be a turn-off. But using characters they already know might also be a great way to introduce readers to something they've always been curious about, but not brave enough to try themselves.

And if anyone would know about BDSM, it would be Chris, wouldn't it? He'd be a great teacher for someone like Toby. And just thinking about Toby's makeup - with that fucked-up mindset of his, he could easily be drawn into that world. It made me happy, that's for sure.
