The `Scandal in Sandalia' Affair by Jomil S. V. Mulvey (R)
Fandom: THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
Pairing: Kuryakin/OFC (Het)
Length: 21,000 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Stories are posted on David McCallum Fans Online
Why this must be read:
I picked this story to recommend for two reasons. The first is the lovely use of language by Jo Mulvey. I love how the author can turn a phrase:
Holster bulges were not only unfashionable, they could be misconstrued so easily.
Napoleon speaking to Illya - "[Waverly] is looking to repay some sort of very important favor, and he needs a tag-along for some VIP: female-type. He said it's a cake-walk, which means it's a suicide run, so, naturally, I thought of you."
Taken singularly, her features were none of them beautiful, except for the extraordinary smoke-gray eyes, but the whole was harmonious. Illya could no more describe which part conveyed the beauty than he could pick out `beautiful' notes in a piece of music.
He was giddy, though he had had next to nothing to drink, and felt as if he rode a roller- coaster, up to swirling red stars, and down to sweet, perilous depths. She shuddered, and falling down upon him, bit his shoulder to smother a cry. The deep, trembling brought his own peak, and the roller coaster left the track, and blasted into space.
The second reason is the intricate plot. The story begins with Illya bumping into a woman from his past - Jessie Taylor. Waverly wants an eye kept on her when she travels to Sandalia, but he doesn't want to officially assign Illya. Thus he orders the Russian not to go with Jessie, but unofficially he throws Illya to the wolves by telling Illya to go and investigate. Further complicating matters is the fact that Illya's not sure if Jessie's with the good guys or the bad guys at the moment as her allegiance tends to flip-flop.
And then she throws him a curve - she also orders him not to go to Sandalia. So naturally Illya just has to go...
