Why this must be read:
Much of Boromir's and Faramir's personalities - their strong sense of duty, their devotion to each other - were shaped by the death of their mother at a young age. Cori paints a sweet and sad picture of the two young boys, primarily dealing with the emotional impact of their mother's death, but with just a few words here and there also saying a great deal about their status in Gondor, their relationship with each other and with their father, Denethor.

As you said, it says a lot about what sort of life these two children will have and the burdens they will bear on their shoulders, and the story does it in a quiet, understated way.
