Why this must be read: Written for a remix challenge, Don't Give A Damn takes a sweet story where Chapel defends McCoy's honour, and twists it into an excellent mirror!verse tale about that time when our!McCoy and mirror!McCoy switched realities. Well written, with wonderfully twisted characterisations and pitch perfect dialogue, this is mirror!verse story telling at its best.
Excerpt:
He is a year ahead of her, and a doctor where she is a nurse, and so he is leading their team when they are yoked into an emergency sim halfway through their third year. They've never really worked with one another before, have never really talked beyond a few words in one of their defense seminars, so it's a surprise when their team breaks apart into pairs for the next stage of the simulation and he turns to her.
"You're Christine Chapel," he says.
She looks at him, startled. He knows who she is? She, who has been hearing stories about him since she arrived at the Academy, isn't sure whether to be pleased or concerned for her health in the foreseeable future.
"You're – " He smiles and tilts his head. "You were Roger Korby's fiancée, weren't you? I was following his research. Before…"
"Before the accident," Christine finishes.
"Mmm." He is still smiling down at her. "You wouldn't know anything about that, would you? Last I heard, he was still down on the books as officially missing."
"Yes," Christine says. "That is the story."
