Taking Chances by bistokids (R)

Hi, I'm [livejournal.com profile] blueteak and I'll be driving the van this month. I'm going to rec a huge range of work, from older material to newer work, case fic to kinky fic (and maybe kinky case fic) and gen, slash, and het. Hope you enjoy the ride!
Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Pairing: Sam/Gene
Length: 2,262
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] bistokids
Author Website: Fiction index on LJ
Why this must be read:
In addition to mixing humor and sexiness in just the right measure, ensuring that neither cancels out the other, bisto's given us a fic that shows Sam analyzing Gene, trying to figure out how best to deal with him. And not being sure he has the right answer. This also wins for plotting!Sam, spot-on dialogue, a surprise appearance (as bisto says in her summary, "Guten tag"), and a wonderful depiction of the atmosphere in CID.

Brief Excerpt:
Their relationship, hardly one which could have been called auspicious from the moment when Gene had dragged Sam by the lapels into the bearpit that he laughably called an office, had recently nose-dived with startling rapidity – to the point where even Ray had stopped sniggering and started to look genuinely concerned. Sam’s one attempt to address this issue, to point out the lack of professionalism and its effect on the officers around them (and, by extension, the smooth and effective operation of the team as a whole) had been met with an exhortation to ‘cut out the poncey Hyde bollocks and piss off and bother some other poor bastard.’

Yay! *muppet arms*

Also, the LoM Crack Van listing on delicious *is* up to date, but the tag bundles are just so wonky as to be useless, and I can't add to them so they are out of date. BUT it's there for reference, all 284 recced fic! (unless I missed one?)

Thanks for driving, BlueTeak!

Hey Mikey!

If you open up your LoM Crack Van page in Delicious, then click on the Tags button (or scroll to the bottom of the Tags list at right and click the "view all" tag = same thing) ... then click the "View as list" and "Sort by alpha" options (and you may have to go back to the Tags list between these two steps, yeah, it's stupid) ...

Well, you'll eventually get to something approaching normalcy. Although, annoyingly, Delicious doesn't retain your selection after the current session. It would be sooo nice to have a link to that particular configuration of the tags page!

Also, FWIW I haven't had any difficulty adding new tags. When you're adding a new link, you enter the new tag(s) into the blank field under the words Tags (optional). To edit an existing link, you click on the tiny little "pencil" icon (looks very little like a pencil!) in the upper right of the link box, and it opens the same pane with the same Tags (optional) field.

I'm pretty familiar with the thing, I've been fighting it for a while. I did not have any troubles adding a couple of tags -- except in one case, where Delicious just borked the entry so badly I had to delete it and start over. But no, not much trouble there. The real problem was adding new tags to bundles; sometimes I could, sometimes I couldn't, sometimes it would "take", sometimes it wouldn't. *shakes fist*

The sort feature for the tags is helpful, but only if you know what you are looking for. At least they are showing all tags now, instead of the "top 20" or whatever their brilliantly stupid idea was a while back; also, picking a tag to filter is unreliable. For instance, if I select "bistokids" then it also filters in "bistokids-reccer" which is not the same thing.

Why and how Delicious could utterly destroy what was working so well is beyond me. It's functional now, but hardly useful.

Ah, tags in bundles: sorry, I managed to misread that bit. Yes, it seems to be completely haphazard. And the filtering on tags is wonky, I've no idea why.

Why and how Delicious could utterly destroy what was working so well is beyond me. It's functional now, but hardly useful.

WORD.

I really appreciate your persisting with the maintenance of LoM Crack Van, especially in the face of all these frustrations and challenges. It IS a huge service to the fandom, and we are lucky to have it--and you. Thank you! *grateful hug*
