Yet another excellent Yuletide fic, this time from 2009. It's roadtrip fic - one of those fanfic cliches - but it reflects on their other 'roadtrip' in a set of almost-parallels that really make you think. The questions of friendship and war are looked at from the guys' point of view, and we're left to come to our own conclusions. It feels straight out of the mini.
The characterisation is excellent - you both feel and see the different layers of Brad and Ray - and their voices are spot on. They're guys who've just come out of a really shitty situation and are trying to come to terms with it, themselves, and each other. At the same time, they're capable Recon Marine BAMFs who don't know when - or how - to give up; and they have a mission to get squared away.

They'd both been home for two weeks when Ray showed up on Brad's doorstep in California with a can of Red Bull in one hand, a duffel bag hanging from the other, and a shit-eating grin on his face.
"Pack your suitcase, make yourself look pretty, and don't forget your purse, 'cause we goin' on a road trip."
Brad's expression didn't shift from its default "impassive and possibly pissed off" setting. "Is that you talking, Ray, or the PTSD?"
