Why this must be read:

Because it's a beautiful and poignant take on wingfic. Mergatrude's story is more about nature and transformation than angels, grounded in the worldbuilding that was inspired by a news story about eagles.  It jumps back and forth between the past, with Ray at the beginning of the change, and the present, with Fraser waiting for him to return--and remembering for both of them. One minute, you're reading something that feels like it's part of a nature documentary, and then she absolutely breaks your heart with just a sentence.

I was ill-prepared for Ray's final change. I knew that I should limit contact with him as much as possible, if he were to have any chance at surviving in the wild. In the end, I sought help from raptor rehabilitation organizations, who proved infinitely more helpful than the books on falconry I'd borrowed from the Whitehorse Public Library. One man from the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society was eager to share his success in releasing his daughter, a peregrine falcon who'd gone on to successfully raise her own young.

Thus, every feather obeys the wind can be found on LJ and AO3, and please don't forget to leave feedback for the author.
