Why this must be read: There's been a wealth of fanfics written about Malcolm and family, making the most out of the odd little tidbits we've seen of his mother and seemingly uptight, rather unpleasant father. This one is my absolute favorite. Malcolm is back on earth, and breaks the news to his family about his relationship with Trip, his superior officer. It does not go over well, needless to say. This story is beautifully told, with honest emotion. There's no melodrama, and Malcolm isn't drowning in angst, as he sometimes does in this type of fic. I also appreciated the lovely, quiet scene with his sister, Madeline. This is a thoughtful, well-written fic with excellent characterizations. I found it to be extremely touching.
