Why this must be read:

Because it's a story that makes me tear up--and smile--every time I read it. Set against the backdrop of a funeral, Très Méchante has created a compelling backstory for Ray as he reflects on his difficult, complicated relationship with his father, all of which is now left unresolved between them. Disappointment, love, fear, the toll of living one's life "undercover"--we see all of that in their shared history. Not only is this one of the richest depictions of Damien Kowalski I've come across in dS fanfic, but it also one of my favorite Dead!Bob's as well (plus an awesome Stella, in just a few paragraphs). And the ending just makes me want to hug all of them.

Everyone stood for the final prayers and the lowering of the casket. He really wished he’d found a way to tell his dad he understood the concern, that he wasn’t angry anymore. He’d give anything if he could hug his dad, or even just get an atta-boy slap on the back. For one brief moment, he was a child again, needing his daddy to keep the bad things away.

Ray stood tall during the last prayer. His father never knew that he’d been the reason Ray had excelled at undercover work. In trying so hard to be the man his father wanted him to be, Ray had learned how to hide himself and behave according to any given situation, no matter how uncomfortable he felt inside.

In a way, he’d been undercover his whole life.
