Why this must be read: Well this story puts a new twist on Jeannie Walton, she's not the nice, helpless girl Hutch remembered. This story is full of Starsky angst and lots of Hutch hurt/comfort and lest I forget, jealousy!
At the small diner on 12th Street, Hutch ordered a salad and a glass of water. “Jeannie?” he asked.
“Oh, um, just a Tab, please,” she said, her eyes never leaving Hutch’s face. He’s even more handsome now, if that’s possible, she thought. I should never have left him. We were so perfect together. Remembering their nights together, she wet her lips and put her hand out to take his across the table.
“Hutch, remember all the good times we had together?”
“That was a long time ago.”
“Oh, Hutch…I made a mistake. I thought you would be better off without me, but now I know we need to be together.”
Hutch watched her face, remembering. He could separate her from the horrible ordeal he went through with Monk and his goons; that wasn’t it. He just couldn’t manage to dredge up any feelings for her at all. Gently, he disentangled his hand from her grip. “Jeannie, I meant what I said when I told you if we were going to end it, we needed to really end it. I thought you meant it, too.”
“But…it’s been a year! We can try again!”
