Why this must be read:
Wondering what you're going to do today? Why not spend the morning/day/week reading one of the real classics of the Profiler!Mulder genre. 500K of angst, conspiracy (with a small 'c') and mystery. An old friend of Mulder's commits suicide, but was there something sinister about it?
With a story this long I could end up writing a rec almost as long as the story, so I'll restrain myself and just tempt you with a few highlights.
It's involving. You keep on reading to find out what's going to happen. Then just as one mystery is solved, another comes along, and before you know it you've reached the end and seemed to have lost a morning/day/week somewhere.
It switches between present and Mulder's time in the ICU, so gives plenty of scenes to satisfy those who like the profiler aspect of Mulder.
It gives Mulder a friend in the past who's believable and likeable, and Mulder doesn't have to act out of character to achieve this.
Considering it was written in 1997, it has a surprising resonance with current affairs.
It brings back Patterson.
It gives Scully a 'Silence of the Lambs' type scene with Patterson.
And for you all you shallow Muldertorture fans, Mulder gets hurt ... a lot. <g>
