Why this must be read:

This series left me breathless. Zuben is a master wordsmith, pure and simple, able to invoke such amazingly complex, subtle feelings, drawing you into the story so that you’re on the edge of your seat, wanting to know more. I read this as it was being posted, and have to admit there were days when I checked my friends list a LOT, hoping for a new installment. And that was without (for the most part) cliffhangers. I just wanted to know more about this world, about young chieftain Jared, who lost his name and clan in battle to a more experienced rival chieftain, Jensen. Wanted to watch that relationship evolve, the slow growth, the tentative trust. I also love that it’s all from Jared’s POV, so the reader really understands and feels some of Jared’s confusion, uncertainty and frustration, since we can’t see into Jensen’s head any more than Jared can.

WARNING: Dubcon (especially in the first segment) and mentions of past abuse.

Jared was disarmed and flat on his back in a few heartbeats.

His pulse was thumping like the galloping of a horse as Ackles knelt over him, sweat gleaming on his bare arms, short sword coming to lay across Jared's throat. "Do you yield?" he asked in the common tongue but with a drawling accent.

Jared stared up at him, feeling the kiss of the blade at his throat and the eyes of his clan on his defeated form. "What of my people?" he forced out.

Green eyes bored through Jared. "Our slaves are treated well," Ackles replied. "They will be fed and clothed and given work, not harmed."

Jared grimaced. Better that than being slaughtered or sold off to traders. Sweat was trickling down into his eyes, stinging like tears. "My mother and sister?"

"Will be in my own mother's household." Ackles leaned closer, his grip on the blade unwavering.

So here it ends, Jared thought. Aloud he said, "Then I yield."

Ackles' brows quirked up as if in surprise, but he lifted his sword over his head, shouting words in a language Jared did not know. A second later, there was a cheer from the Ackles clan. Jared turned his head away, unable to see his people's reaction to his failure to defend them and to keep their name alive.
