Why this must be read: 5 kids they didn't have and one they did. Very fluid style and believable situation. Awesome!
There is a small boy in too large of glasses and too large a t-shirt sitting in front of Mark. He looks interested in the story, but when he sees Eduardo he sits up straight and gives Eduardo his whole attention.
And Eduardo blinks. He processes that the shirt the boy is wearing is one of Mark's old Harvard shirts and that's why it is consuming his body. Eduardo also notices, after a moment, that the little boy is waving to him. Mark notices too and turns his head to look up at Eduardo.
Mark breathes out Eduardo's old nickname and Eduardo sees a smile flicker over Mark's weary face for all of a moment. Then Mark clamps down on it.
“Toby, that's your Uncle Wardo.”
“Hi!” The little boy, Toby, stumbles to his feet and oh god, Eduardo thinks as the shirt falls all the way to his feet. Turning his head as he starts to feel numb, Eduardo stares slack jaw at Mark.
“Toby, play with your talking Pooh Bear,” Mark says as he pushes himself to his feet. Then he is walking past Eduardo, grabbing his wrist as he goes, and pulling Eduardo toward the kitchen.
