The Recording by CodeREDbazooka (PG)
Fandom: Sherlock
Pairing: none
Length: 3,685 words
Author on LJ: not that I'm aware of
Author Website: Stories on AO3
Why this must be read: Set post-Reichenbach where Sherlock is dead and disgraced, Lestrade has been given a sideways promotion and is now stuck in limbo at work, Donovan and Anderson are as unlikeable as they ever were and John is once again reliant on his cane. A package addressed to Lestrade is delivered to New Scotland Yard, but when he opens it the envelope inside is addressed to John. Inside that envelope is a recording; a recording that changes everything.
This short story made me cry, made me angry, made me want to wrap John Watson in a big hug and take Greg Lestrade out for a pint. Yes, it's incredibly angsty but I found it to also be cathartic. Take a deep breath and click the link. You won't regret it. (Just grab a couple of tissues first, okay?)

PS:
crack_van needs you! I looked at the sign-up sheets for Sherlock fandom and it's almost empty. Taking the van for a spin is a lot of fun, for the most part, and you only need to promise to rec four stories over the course of a month. Luckily for us, there's a plethora of wonderful stuff out there to choose from and new works are emerging every day. If you're interested, posting guidelines can be found here and the sign up sheet can be found here.
