Fandom Overview: Reservoir Dogs
Hi everyone,
I'm
lilly_the_kid and I'm gonna be reccing Reservoir Dogs this month and I thought I'd start out with a fandom overview.
This will be full of major spoilers for the entire movie and there will be mention of violence and torture, so, please consider yourselves warned.

Reservoir Dogs is Quentin Tarantino's first movie and it deals with the bloody aftermath of a botched diamond heist.
The movie starts with a group of men having a lively conversation over breakfast in a diner. We learn that Joe is the boss and that Mr. White seems to know him very well. We learn that Mr. Pink doesn't believe in tipping, we learn that Mr. White thinks this is bullshit, because being a waitress is hard work. We learn that Mr. Brown thinks that Madonna's "Like a Virgin" is a metaphor for big dicks while Mr. Blonde thinks that it's about a very vulnarable girl who has been screwed over and finally found the right guy.
In the next scene Mr. White is driving a car while Mr. Orange lies crying and bleeding in the backseat. He's been shot and he's afraid he's gonna die. Mr: White tries to assure him that everything's gonna be fine.

They arrive at a warehouse where they wait for the others.
Mr. Pink arrives and he's very upset. He's convinced that they were set up. The heist went south and suddenly they were surrounded by the police. We also learn that Mr. Blonde had started a shooting spree as soon as the alarm went off, killing several people. Pink and White debate about what to do. In a flashback we learn that White has known Joe for a long time and that they respect and trust each other.
White wants to get Orange to a doctor. Pink's all for this until he learns that White has told Orange his real name. Pink also wants to leave the warehouse as soon as possible because he believes it to be unsafe. White insists on waiting for Joe, so that Joe can get Orange a doctor. Their debate gets more and more heated and when Pink lets on that he doesn't care if Orange lives or dies, White punches him. They start fighting and eventually draw on one another.
"You kids shouldn't play so rough. Somebody's gonna start crying." We see that Mr. Blonde has been watching them for a while.

He takes White and Pink outside to show them someting. Turns out that he took a police man hostage. "Maybe our boy in blue here can answer some some of these questions about that rat business you've been talking about."
We then learn about Mr. Blonde. He was just released from prison where he did four years for Joe. Joe and Eddie are glad to have him back and Eddie wants him to be in on the diamond heist because "Vic's always been nothing but good luck for us. The guys a fucking rabbit's foot for crying out loud".
Back at the warehouse White and Pink are beating the cop. Orange is passed out. Nice Guy Eddie arives and demands to know why the heist has been turned into a shooting spree. He doesn't believe that Blonde would srew up this way. Pink tells him that he stashed the diamonds somewhere safe. Eddie, Pink and White go to get the diamonds and to get rid of some of the cars outside the warehouse.
While they're gone Blonde starts to torture the cop. He lets him know that he doesn't care about information, he just wants to torture him.
He dances to "Stuck in the middle with you" and slashes the cop's face.

Nobody writes a lap dance like Quentin Tarantino. Blonde: "Was it as good for you as it was for me?"
He cuts off his ear, douses him in gasoline and when he's about to set him on fire, he's shot by Orange. It then turns out that Orange is the undercover cop and that the other cop, Nash, knew the whole time.
We then learn about Orange and how he infiltrated the gang. We also get to see how he, Brown and White were fleeing from the cops. Brown got shot, Orange and White stopped a car. The woman in the car shot Orange and he shot the woman. White loaded him into the car and we're back to one of the first scenes.
When White, Eddie and Pink return, they find Blonde dead and Eddie shoots the cop. Orange tries to tell them that Blonde was the traitor. Eddie, of course, doesn't believe him. Joe shows up and says that Orange must be the traitor, because he's the only one he wasn't sure about. White refuses to believe this. He insists that Orange is a good man, that he knows him and he wouldn't do such a thing. Joe pulls a gun on Orange, White pulls a gun on Joe and Eddie pulls a gun on White. After some heated discussion they all shoot. Joe and Eddie are dead, White is gravely injured and crawls to Orange. Outside the cops can be heard arresting Pink.White takes Orange in his arms. "Sorry, kid. Looks like we're gonna have to do a little time."
Orange then tells White that he's a cop and that he's sorry. White sobs and points a gun at Orange's head. The camera zooms in on White's face. The cops yell for him to drop his gun. There's a shot. Then there are more shots and White falls out of the frame.
What I especially love about this movie is the way the characters are depicted. The viewer gradually gets little bits of information that continue to add subtle nuances. This works especialy well when you rewatch the movie. For example, there is White who is very caring and compassionate towards Orange. In the diner he insists that waitresses have hard lives and that they depend on tips. However, there's also the scene where he and Orange case out the diamond store and he casually tells Orange how to control a crowd by threatening and inflicting violence. At first Orange is having a good time, but when White is finished, he looks at him differently. Later, after the heist went south and Brown was shot, Orange sees White shooting two police officers in cold blood. So, there's White as a ruthless, violent criminal and there's White who risks everything for Orange, a man he only met a few days ago.
Another example would be Vic aka Mr Blonde. In the diner he sides with White on the issue of tipping and he insists that "Like a Virgin" is about love and not just a methaphor for big dicks. He did four years for Joe and he and Eddie are good friends. Eddie wants him on the job, because they can trust him. However, he started a killing spree and tortured the cop. This behaviour does not correspond with the way Joe and Eddie think of him, so maybe those four years in prison changed him in such a way that his behaviour could not be anticipated by the people who know or used to know him.
And there's, of course, Orange aka Freddy Newandyke. At the beginning, when Orange is bleeding in the warehouse White admits to Pink that he told Orange his real name. White: "He just got shot. It was my fault he got shot. He's a fucking bloody mess. He's screaming. I swear to God, I thought he was gonna die right then and there. I'm trying to comfort him, telling him not to worry, everything's gonna be ok, I'm gonna take care of him and he asked me what my name was. I mean, the man was dying in my arms. What the fuck was I supposed to do? Tell him, sorry. I can't give out that fucking information. It's against the rules. I don't trust you enough. Maybe I should have but I couldn't." First this scene just seems to illustrate how scared Orange was when he got shot. Later in a flashback, we learn that Orange as the undecover cop had, of course, been looking into White, so him asking for his name could also have been about gaining further intel.
In another flashback we see that Orange shot the woman who shot him which adds another layer to the scene with him crying and bleeding in the backseat of the car. Of course, he's scared and in pain, but also deeply distraught about killing a civillian.
Pink considers himself a professional who deals with a bad situation the best way he can. He's the only one of the main characters who isn't emotionally attached to anyone and he's the only one who survives.
This way of characterization and story telling offers many opportunities for great fics. What happened that made White trust Orange this much? What happened to Vic in prison? How did Orange deal with being undercover? ...
The Fandom
There are many amazing stories out there. The biggest pairing is Orange/White,

(the way White trusts Orange and does everything for him and the way Orange just has to tell White the truth even though he knows what that means...)

"I'm so fucking scared. Can you please hold me?"

(and there's this thing of beauty)
there's also Vic/Eddie

(There's the scene where they wrestle and argue about who would fuck whom until Eddie's Dad has enough of it and tells them to roll around on the floor in Eddie's office.)

(I can't remember where I found these gifs. If they're yours and you'd like me to credit you or remove them, just let me know.)

Also, the look on Eddie's face when he sees that Vic is dead.
and some Orange/Blonde.

(This was apparently part of some article/interview, but that does not explain why this exists. I'm just glad it does.)
Communities/Archives:
resdog_fic (all kinds of Reservoir Dogs fanfic)
