Why this must be read:

Here's an example of the striking yet quiet character work that makes GK fandom such a pleasure. The story looks at Nate, at the end of the war and just returning home, stuck in between what he has to do and what he wants to do, what he planned for and what he got. Nate is tangibly present - the sharp glints of humor, the crushing weight of command - even as he's not dealing well. It's a heavy read, insightful and beautifully done.

Two days, three days, up, run, briefing, patrol, home, paperwork. Nate feels like he’s swimming through the routine, or maybe drowning in it, and this isn’t how he thought this would go.

It isn’t how he thought it would end, and maybe it’s better than some of the endings he imagined, none of the dress uniforms and regret he thought he had coming to him, but that doesn’t make up for the rest of it.
