Why this must be read:

Because this story nearly brought me to tears.

I don’t cry a lot from fic or movies. But this story is special. I didn’t expect its title to actually mean that I’d be tearing up when I read it.

The story was written for the Sentinel Reverse Bang of 2012, where artwork was posted and stories were written for it. Beth did the lovely artwork that serves as the title/cover art for the story.

The title comes from a piece of literature that has always been very special to me, The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. ” It is such a secret place, the land of tears.”

The story is set post series, and Blair has become a cop and Jim’s partner. Following a particularly tough case, says the author’s summary, Jim knows they need to get away. The case involved a serial killer, who murdered a child and nearly killed Jim too. Blair got there in time to save Jim but not the final child victim of the killer. Jim is recuperating from surgery on his knee and stomach and Blair hasn’t been talking about what happened. Jim, who is usually the one in the pair to repress his emotions, has apparently learned that when you see a dead kid and your partner hurt and you kill a guy, you really should talk about it at some point. So he goes to Major Crime to ask Simon for some vacation time and the Captain agrees. Jim then worries he’ll have to convince Blair to go with him. Blair not only hasn’t been talking but Jim worries that unless they get out of town for a bit, they might return to work before either of them are ready.

Jim has reserved a house on the beach in the Outer Banks and Blair does agree to go. Once there, they awkwardly begin their vactation. It’s a little difficult since Blair isn’t in a vacation frame of mind and Jim is still having some pain from his injuries.

Once there, Blair has nightmares he won’t talk about and in a scene from his POV, the reader learns he’s concerned that on even away from Cascade, he won’t be able to get away from his memories. Both of them are walking on eggshells here. Blair worries about Jim hurting and not eating while Jim worries more about Blair not talking.

In town, they visit a used book store, which is always the kind of place Blair loves. While he shops, Jim chats with the owner, a Viet Nam vet. When Blair brings up the books he’s decided to buy, the guy tells him that Jim informed him that Blair had saved his life, relating that he had a good buddy in the service who saved his life more than once too.
A little nervous about the answer, Blair asks what happened to his buddy – and learns he owns another store in the town. I thought it was good that the author avoided the obvious cliche of having the buddy die in the war.

Later, they go for a swim.

Jim shrugs. “If I get tired, I’ll rest. Come on in. The water’s nice.”
Blair gives him a strange, sharp look at that, but he nods shortly. “Yeah, okay. I’ll be out in a minute.”

All TS fans will remember when Blair said those same words to Jim – it was after the fountain where Jim literally breathed life back into Blair and their spirit animals jumped together. Blair talked about the experience and asking Jim to take that spiritual journey with him said, “the water’s fine.” Jim wasn’t ready to do that then, and Blair figures he still isn’t.
But Jim does love Blair. He just thinks that if he made a move, he’s lose Blair’s friendship and he wants them to be like the two old war buddies, still together thirty years later. Finally, after they enjoy the ocean together, Blair is finally ready to talk.
Again, Enigmaticblue doesn’t take the obvious route of Blair being messed up because he had to kill the bad guy. As Blair explains how he feels and why, the two grow closer. As the tender story ends, my eyes were wet.
