The Aegis Group by Veronica (NC-17)

Howdy. I’m back again for another round. Just a heads-up that I’ll be out of radar range for part of the month. I’ll be front-loading entries to keep you occupied, though. Here we go!

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair Jim/FC (past)
Length: 86,000 words
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] veronicaluv
Author Website: oooh, shiny

Why this must be read: This is a long, engrossing AU that takes bits and pieces of canon and, like a jigsaw puzzle, puts them together to reveal an intelligent and satisfying read.

The main sentinel (or a “Five” as he refers to himself) is still Jim Ellison, but the brilliant anthropologist who tries to help him is Eli Stoddard. (If you’re familiar with the show, he’s the never-seen mentor who offers Blair an expedition to Borneo.) Together with others, Eli and Jim form the Aegis Group, which has tried in vain to unlock the secrets of zone-outs. Enter Blair Sandburg, Stoddard’s colleague. He’s sent on what should have been a benign errand: to find a book, “The Sentinels of Paraguay” by Richard Burton, from the library of a country squire in Peru and deliver it to Eli. But suddenly Eli is dead in an execution-style shooting and Blair is jailed on trumped-up charges. And that’s just for openers!

With an AU this long and complicated, it would be tempting for the author to invent a lot of OCs. Instead, Veronica sources generously from canon characters to build her world. Although most of them don’t keep their canon histories, they still retain their characterizations; they are easily recognizable as the old friends (and enemies) that you know from the show. Veronica is a terrific, passionate writer and she’s been recced at CV quite often over the years; deservedly so. Immerse yourself and enjoy.

I second the motion. This is one of my all-time favorite stories.
