Mary, Melusine, Mary, Medea by vanitashaze (PG13)
Fandom: STARGATE ATLANTIS
Pairing: McKay/Sheppard
Length: 3,290 words
Author on LJ:
vanitashaze
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read:
Some of the dang best creepy imagery and little details. We get to see a scene out of John's teenager past straight out of a horror flick, ala Blair Witch. Then to see it repeated in Atlantis, our guy's refuge from all things scary in Pegasus. The intense little details
vanitashaze uses sucks you into the narrative something fierce: Rodney's Jack O'Lantern grin, the use of the color gray, Simpson's beating foot reminiscent of a heartbeat, a grinning mask screaming from the trees of John's past, the morgue-like cold, ghoul-like faces of the searchers. It just all builds up to a shudder of horror when we're still left unresolved at the end. And that last phrase.... Just dang.
Across the lab, Simpson has started thumping again, maybe this time to the music, or to the sudden bursts of static from John's radio: the beat steady and measured, keeping time, like a heart under the floorboards.
