Why this must be read:

This short, imaginative piece is based entirely on an idea that is not canon: Matt doesn't actually exist; he's just a figment of Mello's imagination. Despite not being canon, it makes an amazing amount of sense in the story, drawing out lots of canon details as a foundation for this idea until it's surprisingly well-supported. Angsty and sweet at once, this is both a moving love story and an intelligent character study. It's not any less of a romance because of one person technically not existing. Matt's nonexistence is only a minor obstacle to Mello.
