Why this must be read:

Stories that depict Sheriff Stilinski finding out about werewolves are a major staple of TW fandom. In this particular fic, he discovers the truth after the Alpha pack kidnaps him to use him as bait. What follows is a rather heartbreaking outsider POV insight into Derek and Stiles' relationship.

I'm especially fond of how carefully—especially considering the limitations of her POV character—the author's dealt with Derek's fragility. And oh, when Stiles get badly injured, watching the Sheriff and Derek both suffer is downright painful.

The Sheriff struggles awkwardly for a few minutes until he’s able to drag himself into a sitting position, slumped against one wall. It was a couple decades back, but he has been trained for this kind of thing, taught exactly how to act even in the worst-case scenarios.

So he remains calm, and he waits.

Here’s something they don’t cover at police academy: how to overcome the crippling, ugly terror that whispers, “If they take out the Sheriff, what happens to the Sheriff’s son?”
