“Gotham city's finest cop and robber”

Overview vid

I edited an overview vid together because I thought it might be fun to have an overview in form of a vid. A huge thanks to [livejournal.com profile] dapatty for recording the text for me!

Password: WhiteCollar

In case anyone is having trouble understanding the text, here's a transcript of what is being said:

This is Neal Caffrey. He's actually just walking out the front door of a maximum-security prison, even though technically, he still has three months left to serve on a four year sentence. But that's just the kind of crazy stunt he likes to pull. He does all kinds of crazy things. For example jumping off buildings and trams. His motto seems to be “when in doubt and there's no way out, jump!” Or, as Peter would say,

Peter: You box him in, he's gonna run. You have no idea how to handle him. I do.

Which reminds me. This is Peter Burke. He's an FBI agent and the only one who could ever catch Neal. Twice. Or three times, if you count that latest one.
But that's beside the point because Neal got Peter to agree to a deal -- and that's how Neal wound up working for the FBI with a tracking anklet on his … well ankle. Beats prison.
Plus, he met June, this awesome lady who rents him an apartment with a great view of NYC.
So, Neal and Peter catch all these white collar criminals together. But that's not what this show's really about. It's about Neal's and Peter's relationship that goes beyond that of partners.

Neal: What's next, partner?

Peter: Don't call me that!

Obviously, we have these trust issues between them because the one's a con and the other's a fed.

Neal: Out of all the people in my life, Mozzie, even Kate -- you know. You're the only one.

Peter: The only one what?

Neal: The only person in my life I trust.

Well, not so much here. Maybe this is more like what I'm talking about

Neal: Well, that's the heart of our problem, isn't it? You don't trust me. You still don't trust me.

Mainly because they have to keep stuff from each other, Neal because he can't very well confess to all of the crimes he committed -- unless Peter gives him full immunity again, that is --

Peter: I'll make you a deal. Full immunity for anything you say. From this moment until the sun rises over that balcony.

-- and Peter, well, mostly in an attempt to protect Neal.

Peter: C'mon, I'm trying to protect you!

El: Have you told him?

Peter: No.
El: Hon!

Peter: I can't! When Neal's threatened, he gets in even more trouble.

Their relationship also entails a father-son dynamic. They play catch together and Peter says things like

Peter: Yeah, always wondering what they're up to next.

Unimportant white collar criminal of the week: Oh, your son's a handful, too, huh?

Peter: He's very intelligent, but impulsive. His moves tend to land him in trouble.

Obviously, they're also handler and CI. Which gives Peter a certain amount of power over Neal. In theory at least, because it's a full time job trying to keep Neal on the straight and narrow --

Peter: You know I've been working my ass off keeping this kid on the straight and narrow. He's been helping us win cases.

-- and Neal and his partner-in-crime Mozzie are often up to no good.

Neal: I don't know what that means!

Mozzie: It means to hide, obviously!

Which brings me back to his stunts, when he tries to go behind Peter's back and con the FBI.

And even though --

Peter: He's frustrating, I'll admit. He drives me crazy on his best days.

-- Peter and Neal become BFFs who couldn't live without one another.

Peter: If anything were to happen to him, I -- I don't think I could live with it.

Summary

White Collar revolves around the unlikely crime-solving partnership between a charming con artist turned FBI consultant, Neal Caffrey, and his handler, FBI agent Peter Burke.

Neal and Peter had been playing cat and mouse for years before Peter finally caught Neal. With only three months left on a four year sentence, Neal escapes from a maximum-security prison to find his girlfriend, Kate, but Peter finds him again and returns him to prison, where Neal would have to serve an additional four year sentence. But Neal suggests a deal: he will provide his expertise to assist the FBI in catching other elusive criminals as part of a work-release program.

Peter: After all those years of chasing you, your cryptic clues, your late-night phone calls from international numbers...
Neal: All the cookies and birthday cards.
Peter: Yeah. I realized, I liked you.

This deal also includes a tracking anklet Neal has to wear, which monitors his movements and will alert the marshals if he sets foot outside of a two-mile radius. Peter eventually agrees to the deal and declares upon getting Neal out of prison, “You're a consultant, and I own you for four years. You okay with that?” (And lucky for us, Neal is okay with that.)
This would mark the beginning of an unconventional but highly successful partnership.

Since then, Peter and Neal have worked a lot of cases together and have amassed an enviable record within the White Collar Crimes Unit. Their relationship evolved into a deep friendship and while Peter tries to keep Neal on the straight and narrow, Neal will still occasionally step outside the law and use his skills as a con man.

Main Characters

Neal Caffrey

Convicted: bond forgery
Suspected: counterfeiting, securities fraud, art theft, racketeering

Neal Caffrey (Matt Bomer) is a skilled forger and thief, good-looking and sophisticated and one of the world's greatest con artists. He often has to walk the line between his role as an FBI consultant and his old life as a criminal mastermind.

Though Neal's actions haven't always been above board, over time, his relationship with Peter has deepened into a real friendship and he has slowly come to realize he has an honest life worth keeping in New York.

Only Neal can make Peter go all …

Facepalm!

Peter Burke

Peter Burke (Tim DeKay) is a hard-working, honest FBI agent in the White Collar Crime Unit and the head of the investigative team on which Neal serves. He is happily married to Elizabeth and his life was certainly less complicated before Neal came along and became his partner.

Since then, Peter has been equal parts exasperated and inspired by Neal as they have taken down some of the most notorious criminals in the city. Just as Peter has tried to guide Neal towards a more honest life, so too has Neal influenced Peter by teaching him to think outside strict FBI lines.

Elizabeth Burke
Photobucket
Peter's wife, Elizabeth (Tiffani Thiessen), understands her husband's work ethic, and mirrors it in her own work as an event planner. She often plays the role of her husband's moral compass.

Diana Barrigan

June Ellington
Photobucket
June (Diahann Carroll) is an elderly widow who meets Neal at a thrift store. A quick judge of character, she soon offers Neal her guest room. June's husband owned a wardrobe of designer clothing that she gives to Neal. She is protective of Neal and does not care that he is a convicted felon.

Photobucket
Alex (Gloria Votsis) is a friend and past lover of Neal's who works as a black market fence.

Neal!Whump
Neal!Whump is very popular in fandom.
But fortunately, canon sometimes gives us whumpers what we need.

Such as drugged!Neal...

Nicely written, though I do feel it should include more about El, considering how much of fandom is all about the threesome.

I think that hte main reason i wanted to see El mentioned more is because one of the things that makes White Collar fandom so special and lovable, is that it's one of the rare few fandoms, where the wife of one of the two main male characters is rarely if ever bashed or simply pushed aside. Pretty much most people in fandom, even the Neal/Peter shippers treat her and her marriage to Peter with respect . I have seen dozens of fandoms and this respect for El is so rare that this positive attitude is the main reason I love fandom to begin with.

Enjoyed the post and all of your recs thus far, but you hit the top with your list of lj's. I don't have time to investigate all of them but I'm going to try!

Great overview, but you might want to make mention of Laura Cruz, since she was on the team S1 instead of Diana and a lot of early stories include her. Also, Kate probably deserves a mention other than just as the reason Neal broke out of prison?

Awwww!

This is awesome! I loved the vid and the info.

Well done!
