Why this must be read: What I like most about this story is the surprising take on this pairing. When I see Kaylee/Inara, if it's one-sided, it's poor Kaylee pining away. I love that this story flips that around to explore why the opposite might be true. Also, the detail-work and imagery is beautifully sensual and creates a palpable atmosphere of bittersweet, lush longing.
Inara keeps watching as Kaylee passes the sponge over her hands, her arms, her neck, her shoulders, and the water in the bowl turns grimier. As Kaylee struggles to reach that tricky spot between her shoulder blades, Inara takes the sponge from Kaylee's hands before she can think about it enough to stop herself. "Here, let me help."
