Why this must be read:
This story is set straight after Sentinel Too, part two. After the events in Sierra Verde Blair reassesses his relationship with Jim and decides it's time to move on. There is no dramatic running away, instead Blair moves out of the loft but stays in Cascade promising to help Jim if necessary. He manages to find another sentinel to write his dissertation on. Of course that doesn't end well and after a series of dramatic events our two friends end up back together with hopefully a renewed commitment to their friendship and their relationship as sentinel and guide.
I felt that Jim got off the hook far too easily in Sentinel Too, part two and I enjoyed seeing the author address those issues in this thoughtful and well written story.

This IS a very powerful story! a slight warning for the extent of this violence of what happens would have been comforting. But I guess it was supposed to be a shocker like that. "doesn't end well" is quite an understatement, even in the Sandburg Zone. In that it had a sweet ending it was good to read, but it was much more powerful than I thought

This is a magnificent story. Thank you for recommending it, Kernel. You are absolutely right, it is a MUST READ! The rough stuff is well-handled and nothing is gratuitous, IMHO. And the resolution understated, but still powerful.

One of the things I've always liked about this story is the idea that Blair might have been more effective if he had the enthusiastic backing of the university. It's interesting to speculate and Rather did a very good job with it. Good choice.
