Why this must be read: Two things you need to know about The Avengers fandom: 1) Clint and Phil flirt (a lot), and 2) there's a lot of speculation about Captain America being a virgin. This story combines these two elements spectacularly when SHIELD decides it would rather take Steve's virginity out of the overall equation rather than risk some kind of public relations nightmare down the line. Worried that Tony Stark will either a) tease Steve with said virginity publically, or potentially worse, b) make a claim on Steve's virginity, SHIELD orders Phil Coulson to deal with it, and Phil, in turn, assigns Clint a very special op.

What follows is both hilarious and so, so in character for everyone. Steve is perfect in this, and Phil and Clint manage to be both funny and affectionate, and then hot like burning. I'm pretty sure that the old cliche of someone coming on command was just waiting for this fandom; seriously, when Phil Coulson gives you an order, are you going to refuse?

Clint is honestly not sure where this thing went off the rails. This was supposed to be an assignment, and not a particularly terrible one. Right now, he feels like he’s being judged and found wanting on some completely unknown criteria. “This has nothing to do with what happens in the field. If you’re happy being the world’s oldest living virgin, that’s just fine, no harm, no foul, Cap. I’m certainly not asking for your goddamned hand in marriage.”

Steve is glaring at him now. “I’m not interested in being your little something on the side.”

“On the side of what??” Clint yells.

Steve looks honestly taken aback, which Clint is glad for until... “You. And Agent Coulson. I mean. You’re not? Tony and Natasha said you were practically married.”

Clint blinks at him and tries to ignore the panicked feeling welling up in his chest.
